There was a perception that the Commonwealth Games athletes are ‘less’ than those who attend the Olympics. We wanted to prove that wrong by demonstrating that to qualify for the Commonwealth Games, you need to be an elite athlete. Given our prowess in shotput, we took a portable Shot Put arena around the country and invited the public to ‘give it a go’. With Dame Valarie Adams and Tom Walsh’s distances marked on our field, even the largest and strongest failed to get close – proving that Commonwealth Games athletes are world class.
