Challenge

  • Create a fresh, compelling race format that goes beyond conventional endurance / adventure events – something that captures the spirit of Red Bull, with high stakes, authenticity and challenge.
  • Convince Red Bull Global to back a completely original idea, from ideation through to execution.
  • Execute a complex, multi-day event in remote, rugged terrain. This involved coordinating many moving pieces: multiple high country stations, rough terrain, logistics, safety, athlete support.
  • Manage a large scale of people: both in participants (200 athletes) and in staffing (80+ staff), ensuring coordination, communication, and safety over two full days through multiple stations.
  • Maintain consistency, excitement, and quality across repeated annual occurrences (Wanaka, over four years) so that each edition feels fresh and delivers on the promise of “adrenaline-pumping perfection.”

Solution

  • Conceptualized a global multisport race format – “Red Bull Defiance” – that mixes endurance, adventure, and strategy.
  • Secured Red Bull Global’s endorsement to support the concept, giving it legitimacy and the resources required.
  • Chose Wanaka as the location and ran the event over two days, navigating through eight private high country stations. This provided diverse terrain and environment challenges.
  • Managed full logistics: recruiting and organising ~200 athletes; coordinating ~80 staff; ensuring safety, supplies, transport, communications; managing rest, transitions, etc.
  • Delivered multiple editions (over four years) with consistency of experience while refining operations and ensuring each event met high adrenaline, quality-driven standards.
