With skateboarding and surfing newly introduced as Olympic sports for Tokyo 2021, there was a need to help New Zealand youth understand when and how they could watch them, and what pathways existed to participate. The New Zealand Olympic Committee wanted to capture attention, especially among young people, in a saturated media environment -finding a way to stand out and spark engagement.
We constructed a fully authentic 12m × 3m skateboard – every layer built as it would be on a real board – and took it on a 40-day nationwide tour. Schools, skateparks, surf beaches, and iconic NZ landmarks. The board was the story, the journey was the content, and the conversations it sparked in every community were the outcome. Young people didn’t just hear about the new Olympic sports -they saw, touched, and photographed something they’d never seen before.
